This mysterious country
of Central Asia, with its ancient cities as old as Rome
and Babylon, enchants everyone with its oriental culture
and hospitality. |
Tashkent
- The capital of the Republic of Uzbekistan is situated on
the crossroads of the famous oriental trade route, the Silk
Road.
Samarkand
- This ancient city was built by the Emperor Timur to become
the centre of the world. Ancient Arabic manuscripts describe
it as the "Pearl of the East", "Legend of the centuries" and
"Inspiration of Poets".
Bukhara
- This is one of the most ancient cities of the Central Asia.
It stands among salt marshes, hiding from the rest of the
world behind enormous fortress walls. Only the minarets rise
behind them like a mirage.
Khiva
- This retains the exotic spirit of the original medieval
oriental town and has been a UNESCO Heritage Site since 1990.
The fortress walls command a panoramic view of a city which
would seem to have come straight from an Arabian 1001 Nights
fairy-tale.
