The Ukraine

This country has inseparable ties with Russia. Both the Ukraine and Russia have a common early history when they were one country called the Kiev Rus.

Kiev - This is the capital of the Ukraine and the oldest centre of Slavdom. It has preserved the architectural masterpieces of the old Rus culture.

Lvov - This is the city where every little street is a living legend. About half of the Ukraine's monuments of architecture are located here, representing all the epochs - the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, Classicism and Baroque. It is a treasure of the national culture.

Odessa - This is the best city in the world, say its inhabitants. It stands on the coast of the Black Sea and combines the traditions of various people and epochs. The Odessa Opera and Ballet Theatre is one of the most beautiful theatres in the world.

Autonomous Republic of Crimea - This part of the Ukraine was originally a part of the Russian Empire. It is rich in antique, medieval, Russian and Soviet monuments. The Crimean Peninsula was a favourite summer resort for the Russian Royal family and aristocrats who built their amazing palaces here.
